Congratulations to the MSHS Opti Minds team which competed in the Social Science section of the competition recently. Team members, David Fensom, Tarni Kirkpartick, Brittany Stenton, (Yr 8) Emma Fenson (Yr9) Monica Dakin (Yr 10) and Facilitator Courtney Reardon (Yr12) were awarded Honours for their creative response to the Opti Minds Challenge.
The team had to devise a solution to a very complex problem. They had to identify and research what they believe are the three worst inventions in the world. These had to be inventions which seemed like a good idea at the time, but in fact caused huge problems for planet earth. They then had to create their own invention which would fix the problems. These creative students came up with the idea of the De-Smoginator, a device filled with algae which sucked in polluted air, purified it and expelled clean air for people and animals to breath. The students worked hard on their presentation and learnt some valuable lessons about time management, team work and problem solving along the way. Maroochydore High has had a long association with Opti Minds (formerly Tournament of Minds) and each year teams have produced award winning presentations.
