GENERAL INFORMATION

The Social Science Faculty at Maroochydore State High School boasts a proud record of successful academic achievement, with students succeeding as Lawyers, Principals of large state high schools, successful journalists to name a few.

The Faculty staff are active in the promotion of the Social Sciences, and in the Senior School Staff work together to, in conjunction with the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences of the University of the Sunshine Coast host the bi-annual Senior Social Science Forum. in 2002,in excess of 400 students from 6 district state and public schools participated. The Forum is designed to give students an experience of

"A day in the life of a University Student"

Community involvement is integral to the success of our Faculty. Maroochydore Rotary participate in the Rotary Mock Interviews which culminate our successful work wise program.

Field trips are an integral part of the teaching/ learning process and our staff have developed a variety of interesting and exciting field trips.

Our students are encouraged to enter the Schools' National Constitutional Convention- (Who will be our first female Prime Minister?) Asia Wise, and The Simpson Prize.

RELEVANCE FOR FUTURE STUDY/CAREERS

The processes and skills taught in SOSE (for example, researching and processing information and presenting information) can be transferred to a wide range of Senior Subject offerings, particularly Ancient and Modern History, Geography and Legal Studies.

On Leaving school, these skills form the basis of most tertiary courses and in general and lead to various career options

 

 

JUNIOR SUBJECTS

WHAT IS SOSE?

The Study of Society and Enviroment course centres on the way people interact with each other and with environments. A range of inter-related concepts and values underpins SOSE. These are drawn from History, Geography, Economics, Law, Civics and focuses on areas such as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander issues, Asian and Australian issues.

AIMS:

Through studies of SOSE, students will be able to:

Search for, recognise, understand and explain the patterns and processes of the way objects are arranged on the earth's surface.

Develop practical skills by which data may be obtained, analysed and presented.

Develop an empathy for other cultures and lifestyles through the understanding of the way people in different places interact both with each other and their environmental settings.

Become involved members of the community in which they live.

To develop opportunities for students to engage in the process of inquiry, so that they may develop knowledge, values and abilities, enabling them to become aware of capable participants in our modern democratic society.

To encourage students to understand that the past impacts on the present.

SOCIAL SCIENCE - YEAR 8

Year 8 Study of Society and Environment aims at introducing students to ideas and experiences which will increase their self-knowledge and help them to participate in their world.

The values, concepts, and skills developed are drawn from a range of traditions - including History, Geography, Environmental issues and Citzenship.

The Social Science Department have fine tuned several exciting and unique excursions which all Year 8 students experience. Students will study the changing coastline from Picnic Point to Mooloolaba. This is an excursion not to be missed.

Unit 1 : What about me?

Unit 2: The Anti-Racism Campaign.

Unit 3: Ancient Civilizations. 

Unit 4: Human Impact of the Environment (Futurescapes)

Assessment includes field reports, assignments and in class tests. Students should be prepared to study for 15-20 mins per night.

Upcoming Events for Year 10's

Tax File Number - YEAR 10's

  • Parents/Guardians of Year 10 students would have received a letter advising that students will be able to apply for a Tax File Number. The Social Science Faculty provides this service for students in partnership with the Australian Taxation Office.

Mock Interviews - YEAR 10's

•  8 th  June is the day scheduled for Mock Interviews with Maroochydore Rotary.

•  300 Year 10 students will be "interviewed" for a position as part of the Work Wise Unit being studied by all Year 10 Social Science students.

•  Students prepare for the interview by developing a Resume, exploring their interests and abilities. Then researched occupations and careers suited to interests and capability.

•  Students will also complete their study plan for the next 2 years under ETRF (Employment Training Reform for the Future).

 

SENIOR SUBJECTS AVAILABLE

ANCIENT HISTORY - SENIOR (QSA SUBJECT)

Ancient History examines the origins of today's civilisation. A study of the political systems of ancient times helps us to understand the principles on which our own government is based. The cultures studied reveal the beginnings of modern art, architecture, science, maths, philosophy and religion.

Ancient History is an interesting and entertaining look into the past that helps our understanding of this present.

Through studying history, student's will:

Develop thinking processes skills essential in the modern day workforce

Understand the nature of history

Become proficient in the processes of historical inquiry and explanation

Understand the forces and influences that have shaped the modern world

Develop the knowledge, ablilities and ethical commitment to participate as active citizens in the shaping of the future.

MODERN HISTORY - SENIOR (QSA SUBJECT)

Studying Modern History can help us live more effectively as global citizens. To live purposefully, ethically and happily with others, we must be able to make wise decisions. Studying Modern History can help us develop the knowledge, skills and values needed to make those decisions.

Through studying history, students will:

Understand the nature of history.

Develop thinking processes and skills essential in the modern day workforce.

Become proficient in the processes of historical inquiry and explanation

Gain an understanding of the historical origins of issues, forces and trends impacting on our world today.

Develop the knowledge, abilities and ethical commitment to participate as active citizens in the shaping of the future.

LEGAL STUDIES - SENIOR (QSA SUBJECT)

At the conclusion of this course of study, students should have developed the following:

Ability to recognise common social situations which have legal implications for their daily lives.

Awareness of their legal rights and responsibilities.

An appreciation of functional knowledge with respect to the interrelationships among individuals, society and the rule of law in Queensland and Australian Society.

Understanding of the processes, operations and structure of our legal system so that they may be more informed and responsible members of the community in which they live.

Strategies and tactics that enable them to use rational and objective methods as well as qualitative and subjective judgements when examining social and legal issues.

An understanding that law, legal processes and legal issues have changed over time, impact on the present, and have implications for future decisions in regard to the increasingly complex social and legal issues that face communities.

The capacity to explore legal implications of controversial social issues.

An appreciation of the interdependence of legal issues in local, Queensland , Australian, international and global communities.
