Your resume is usually the first piece of information a potential employer will have about you. This is your best markering tool to sell yourself for the job. It will either get you an interview or the job itself. Here are a few things to guide you through resume writing.
Your resume will be scanned rather than read so keep the design / layout simple and uncluttered.
- Keep your information relevant to the position for which you are applying.
- Add results, highlighting your contributions and activities
- Remember that paid experience is not the only experience you can have
- Be factual, employers will ask you questions about what you have written about yourself
- Outline important information at the beginning
- List the most recent information first
- Use coloured paper if you wish
- Add your photo
- Make your resume stand out, but make sure it isn't to "out there"
There are great sites on the internet that have a resume builder and others with further information about resume writing. Try one of these:
www.jobguide.dest.gov.au
www.ontrack4work.com.au
www.jobjuice.gov.au
Also you can come into the Careers Room P05 and ask the Vocational Education Liaison Officer, Larney for a resume guide.
