| Monday 1st June marked the beginning of Education Week and one of the themes this year is “Back to School”. Benny Pike, a graduate of Maroochydore High in 1971, came back to school on Monday 1st June to present the school with his torch and running attire from the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games Torch Relay in a special ceremony. Benny is a well known local identity who represented Australia as a boxer at the 1980 Moscow Olympic Games and the 1978 Edmonton and 1982 Brisbane Commonwealth Games. He was the Queensland boxing coach and manager between 1985 and 1990 and the Australian boxing coach and manager between 1987 and 1990. Benny has also commentated at a further six Commonwealth Games and five Olympic Games. At a special presentation ceremony, Benny had an inspirational message for students and then spent time answering their questions and sharing some of life’s lessons that he had learned from his experiences. The memorabilia will take pride of place in the school’s collection. |
